SUGGESTED ACTIVITES WHILE VISITING THE HANCOCK HOUSE:
Golf and / or lunch with a 40 mile view:
French Woods Country Club (open to the public): 15 min S on Rt 97 (across from French Woods Camp). 18 hole course. Both the course and Club House have a 30 mile panoramic views, Breakfast & lunch daily (except if raining). Bar food until early evening to accommodate golfers or those who want to enjoy the great views.
Scenic Drives:Route 97 south from Hancock – called the Scenic Byway due to passing through rolling hills and farmland, views of distant mountains and frequent stretches along the Delaware River. Along the way visit:
Callicoon (30 min): gifts shops, antiques, Catskill Provisions, restaurants, Farmers Market 11-2 pm Sundays
Narrowsburg: (45 min) historic Fort Delaware (costumed interpretation of early American life, open Fri thru Mon), art galleries, gift shops, National Park Service Information Center, bald eagle watching on a lookout over the Delaware River, or visit the riverside dining deck at Cafe Main and watch a nesting pair of bald eagles fish the river and feed their twins in a pine tree directly across the river (closed Tuesdays).
Lackawaxen (60 min): Roebling Bridge (country’s oldest surviving suspension bridge built as an Aqueduct designed by famed engineer John A. Roebling), Zane Grey museum (home of the western author; 10 – 5 Sat & Sun Memorial Day to mid-Oct, plus Fridays in June, July, August), Minisink Battle Ground Park
Biking: Hancock to Hale Eddy along the PA side of the Delaware River West branch Park at NY side of the bridge between Hancock and PA. Bike across bridge to Rt 191. At the curve take right onto Winterdale Rd. that becomes Penn-York Rd then becomes Faulkner Rd. Approx 8 mi of paved & hard packed dirt road rarely traveled
Hiking:Bouchouxville Trail to Jensens Ledges high above the Delaware River Take Rt 97 south 4.7 miles and turn right at sign to Lordsville. Continue 2.9 miles to Lordville where road T’s. Take left and go straight onto Bouchouxville Rd, (look for Dead End sign). Continue down Bouchouxville Rd exactly 2.9 miles and park at the NY DEC parking lot. Trail is about 2 miles one way. Places to Bird Watch in the Hancock Area:
River Access: Make a left out of Hotel, go past Valero gas station and make right over bridge then make another right down road after bridge and keep walking. You will come to the river, this is a great place to spot many of the local birds, including the bald eagles.
Hancock Town Square: Make a right out of Hotel and go past traffic light, square is across the street. The Town Square has a beautiful pavilion and band stand and plenty of trees to attract area birds.
Hancock Nature Preserve and Science Center: West Main Street-Make a right out of Hotel, at traffic light make a right, walk one block to blinking light and make a left. Continue down several blocks and pass Pennsylvania Avenue to 404 West Main Street to the Robert W. Nichol Nature Preserve and Science Center. Behind the Center there are beautiful nature trails open to explore.
